Choosing a Laptop That is Good for Kids

Deciding which of the many brands and models of laptops to buy for your child can be a daunting task. The most important thing you will need to consider is the purpose of the laptop. Will your child be using one of the best laptops for kids primarily to play games or watch videos? Or will they be using it for word processing and Internet research for school assignments?

Once you have identified the purpose of the laptop, you can use the following considerations to narrow down your decision:

  • Durability. If you are buying a laptop for a younger child or for a student who will transport the laptop to and from school, look for the best laptop for kids that can withstand some wear and tear. Some of the best laptops for kids are specifically designed to take a little more abuse than most.
  • Cost. Price is always a consideration when purchasing a laptop. This is even more true when you are buying the best laptops for kids. Consider if you want to invest in a laptop for the long term or if you are looking for a lower cost laptop that you are willing to replace in a few years. Also, if you are thinking of upgrading down the line, see if replacement and or upgradable parts are available for reasonable prices.
  • Processing Power and Memory. Unless your child will be using the laptop for heavy gaming, you will likely be okay bypassing the top of the line processors. Most of the best laptops for kids will have between 320 to 500 GB of memory. If that turns out to be insufficient, it is probably a better deal to purchase an external hard drive instead of investing in more memory initially. Keep in mind that Chromebooks are great laptops for kids, but they do not have a hard drive and instead rely on the cloud for storage.
  • Screen Size. While laptops can come with 17” or larger screen sizes, many of the best laptops for kids are designed with 11” or 13” screens. The smaller size reduces cost and makes the laptop easier to transport. However, older kids or kids who use the computer for photo editing or gaming might do better with a larger size.

Reviews of the Top Rated Laptops for Kids

1. Acer Chromebook 11

The Acer Chromebook 11 is without a doubt one of the best and most reliable laptops on the market. This awesome kids laptop is an updated version of the Acer C720, and its upgrades in processing speed and battery life make it an ideal product for school aged kids.

The Chromebook 11 comes standard with 4 GB of memory and a 16 GB Solid State Drive to make powering on and multitasking effortless. Like any Chromebook, the laptop relies on wireless connectivity, as there are few applications that can run without an internet connection. The laptop has multiple ports including an HDMI, SD, and USB 3.0 port to allow you to connect multiple devices such as an external hard drive or easily transfer data. Kids will especially appreciate the long lasting battery. Even with multi-tabbed browsing and video playback, the Chromebook 11 has an average 9-hour battery life.

This Chromebook has a solid feel that will withstand normal wear and tear. The hinges and the lid are reinforced, yet the laptop is still very light and thin for easy transport. The laptop is not designed to withstand extreme drops, weight, or spills, so it may not be the best purchase for younger children. One area that could be improved on the Chromebook 11 is the screen resolution. While Acer claims that the 11.6 inch screen is an HD screen, its resolution can be grainy, and it can be difficult to view the screen from all angles.

If you are looking for low cost and one of the best laptops for kids that will primarily be used for internet browsing and word processing via Google Docs, the Acer Chromebook 11 is a great choice.

2. ASUS Chromebook C202

Another great option for best laptops for kids is the Asus Chromebook C202. This laptop is similar to Acer’s Chromebook 11 in components and battery life, but it is designed to withstand much more abuse.

The Asus Chromebook C202 has an Intel Celeron N3060 Processor and 4GB of RAM. The 16GB flash storage is powerful enough for the machine to run smoothly. The laptop also features USB, SD, and HDMI ports to allow your child to connect devices and transfer data. Based on lab testing of video playback, the battery has an average life of 10 hours, but it will last much longer with just Internet browsing. One feature that may be appealing for younger children is that the keys are placed closer together (2 millimeters rather than the normal 3 millimeters), which makes typing easier for smaller hands.

The selling feature of this Chromebook is its ability to withstand drops, spills, and everyday wear. A 180-degree hinge connects the screen and keyboard. Not only does this allow for easy viewing in group settings, it also prevents the screen from snapping if children pull too far back on it. The exterior edges are covered with reinforced rubber to lesson the impact of bumps and drops. Furthermore, the bottom of the device has two grips to make the device easier to hold and prevent drops in the first place. The keyboard is also spill resistant and can withstand up to 66 cubic centimeters of liquid according to lab testing. Finally, the laptop is designed to be easy to disassemble and replace parts in case of damage.

While the Asus Chromebook C202 will not win awards for processing speed or screen resolution, it may be worth the slight sacrifice in quality to get a laptop that can hold up to drops, bumps, and spills.

3. Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E560

When a Chromebook no longer has enough power, memory, and versatility for an older child, the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E560 is a great upgrade for a reasonable price.

The ThinkPad Edge E560 is an entry level laptop that works well for students. It is also designed to be a good starter laptop for business and home use. This best laptop for kids has a 15.6” screen where most laptops geared towards children have between an 11” and 13” screen size. The larger size will allow for extended use with less eyestrain. This will be beneficial as your older child completes more and more school assignments digitally. The laptop has an Intel Core i5 processor and a mid range processor which provides plenty of processing power for what older kids will need. Also, with 8 GB of Ram and a 500 GB HDD, the laptop has plenty of storage space and will quickly load webpages and perform other tasks.

The ThinkPad Edge E560 is very versatile for more advanced students and kids. It has 3 USB 3.0 ports to easily transfer data. It is lightweight, weighing in at about 5.39 pounds, but still quite durable. Although this laptop is not designed to withstand dropping, it will hold up against most accidental mistreatment. Under normal use, the battery will last about 10 hours, which rivals that of lower powered Chromebooks.

4. HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 2-in-1 15.6″

Convertible laptops are perfect for kids who have been raised on phones and tablets. The HP Pavilion X360 13.3” gives your child the versatility to lounge, lay, or sit when using this laptop/tablet 2-in1. We also like convertibles for children because they’re made to be tougher than your average laptop. Since they’re meant to be bent and withstand their own weight in tent mode, the hinges and screen are reinforced. The HP Pavilion X360 takes this attention to detail to the next level with its heavy duty construction.

To start, the thick hinges are nice and stiff, keeping the screen from wobbling during use. The hard plastic chassis keeps components cool while protecting them from accidental bumps. The Pavilion X360’s chassis may seem bulkier and less refined than other 13” convertibles, but that’s the better choice for children. Finally, the 1366×768 resolution, 13.3” display sports edge-to-edge glass that protects your screen better than traditional bare bezels.

Built to last, the HP Pavilion X360 13 also has decent components that will grow with your child. This includes a brand new 7th Gen i3-7100U processor at 2.4GHz with integrated HD 620 graphics. While that’s no exactly a gaming CPU, you’ll get a lot of mileage and multitasking from it and the 6GB of fast DDR4 RAM. We wish this laptop came with an SSD, but that’s easy to overlook since its HDD holds 500GB. With specs like these, the rugged HP Pavilion X360 13 will exceed the needs of a younger child but be perfect for school use in a couple years.

At 3.6lbs, this laptop is nice and light while still feeling balanced and well-built. Battery life is also very good. Web surf or play casual games for up to 9 hours on a single charge. Between its lasting construction, portability, and impressive hardware, the HP Pavilion X360 13 is the best laptop for kids of all ages.

5. Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11E (3rd Generation) 11.6″ Touchscreen

We obviously love the HP Pavilion X360 13, but it’s an expensive investment if your child is accident-prone. The Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11.6 is a lot cheaper with many of the same great features. To start, this laptop is a 2-in-1 convertible. That means you can swing the screen 360° for tablet mode, or even put it in a tent for keyboard-free viewing. This laptop’s hinges are a bit looser than the X360’s, but are still strong enough to keep the Yoga securely in place.

Measuring just .9” thick and weighing about 3.5lbs, the Thinkpad Yoga 11.6 maintains a surprising durability. The hard plastic chassis doesn’t bend or creak under pressure. Additionally, the screen isn’t easily bent or warped. Kids can sometimes be rough on their laptops when opening or moving the screen so that’s a great bonus. Children will also have an easy time with the Thinkpad Yoga 11.6’s large, raised keyboard. While many laptops in this size category use soft, low keys, this laptop’s keyboard is easy to use for little hands.

This laptop’s specs aren’t ground breaking but they are better than most mini laptops. The Intel Core M-5Y10C CPU uses integrated HD graphics which are just enough for casual games and streaming video at the max 1366×768 resolution. This 11.6” convertible also enjoys 4GB of RAM and a speedy 128GB SSD. The SSD boots the computer and applications fast so your child won’t get frustrated. Having onboard storage also saves you the trouble of managing their Cloud service.

Like the HP Pavilion X360 13, this laptop is built to survive the trauma of belonging to a young child, as well as being powerful enough for school-age children. If you don’t want to upgrade to something with more computing power in a year or two, the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11.6 is an excellent choice.

6. Premium Lenovo N22 11.6-inch High Performance Laptop Notebook

For younger children who don’t need to do school work on their computers, durability takes precedence over amazing specs. We like to think the Premium Lenovo N22 is the best of both worlds. This laptop may look a bit dated with its thick bezels with 8-point screws, but its bulky design adds to its ruggedness. The screen is deep set to protect from scratches and dings. Large, tight hinges keep the 11.6” screen from wobbling and ensures the laptop remains in closed position while carrying or if dropped. One of our favorite features is the splash-proof keyboard and sealed touchpad. Even spilling a little juice or milk on this keyboard won’t ruin the laptop.

Don’t be fooled by its looks, though. The Premium Lenovo N22 weighs just 2.8lbs and is the same .9” thick as many of its competitors. Young children will be able to tote this laptop around with easy. It also has an impressive battery life, lasting over 10 hours on a single charge. That’s all-day use so your always active child doesn’t have to stay in one spot to use their computer.

Like many of our other favorites on the list, the Premium Lenovo N22 gives your child enough onboard memory that you don’t need to worry about Cloud service subscriptions. This laptop comes with a 64GB SSD for swift start ups and downloads, 4GB of RAM, and an Inspiron N3050 mobile CPU. This combination of hardware is ideal for web-surfing, playing movies, and light gaming.

It’s not the prettiest laptop on our list but it’s one of the most durable. Younger children won’t notice the difference between this and the sleek design of a more expensive model, though, so save money and buy smart. The Premium Lenovo N22 is the sturdy build you need for sticky, clumsy hands.

7. Samsung Chromebook 3, 11.6″, 4GB RAM, 16GB eMMC, Chromebook (XE500C13-K04US)

The benefit of using a Chromebook is that manufacturers save on expensive Windows licensing. Those savings are passed down to you. That means you can get a great laptop for kids at a reasonable price that won’t send you over the edge if an accident happens. The Samsung Chromebook 3 is one of our favorite Chromebooks for its excellent construction and unbeatable value.

The plastic chassis is not as thick as others we’ve tested, but it resists bending and twisting just as well. This is especially true around the screen, where it took more than accidental force to cause warping. The keyboard is also spill and splash-proof, a must-have for kids who insist on eating and drinking at the computer. Still, we would recommend the Samsung Chromebook 3 for older children and tweens simply due to its lightness. This laptop weighs only 2.5lbs and is razor thin. No matter how durable, smaller children may not know their own strength around something so light.

Packed within its impossibly thin frame, the Samsung Chromebook 3 uses a Inspiron N3060 CPU coupled with 4GB of RAM. That’s pretty impressive considering how quietly this machine runs. It never overheats and stays silent through use. Note that there’s just the 16GB SSD for internal storage, so prepare to sign up for a Cloud service. One of the more exciting specs on this machine is the full HD resolution. It really makes the 11.6” look bigger than it is and allows your child to enjoy high res entertainment.

Despite having such a detailed display, the Samsung Chromebook 3 lasts over 11 hours on one charge. That means you can go days, not hours without plugging in. Don’t be surprised to find this laptop all over the house once your child gets their hands on it. This is the best laptop for older kids who need the responsibility of their first laptop.
