Summer is finally here. And, for some, that means going to the beach to cool off, tan, relax, and have fun! While the beach is the perfect place to spend your summer, showing up without preparing can ruin the experience. Here are some tips and tricks to make this summer the best one yet.
While today we think of the beach as a fun and relaxing place, it used to be thought of as a dangerous and stressful place to be. Thanks to modern technology, that is no longer the case. Sunscreen is of the utmost importance in staying safe under the sun. While many people ignore sunscreen in favor of tanning, they often end up with a severe burn, or worse yet, permanently damaging their skin. Even if you are at the beach to tan you should wear sunscreen. Just purchase a sunscreen specifically made for tanning.
While many people think that a higher FPS means more protection, SPF 15 and 30 actually block around 98% of UBV rays, making them highly effective. Keep in mind that sand and water rub away the sunscreen, so you should reapply every 2 hours, even if you don’t go in the water.
The sun isn’t the only part of the beach that can be harmful. The water is a serious force of nature as well. If you are going to the ocean, there are a few things you may want to keep in mind. The most important is the current. The further you go out, the more dangerous it can be, so try not to go much further past waist deep.
While many people are afraid of sharks, they are actually very unlikely to bother you. You are much more likely to run into a jellyfish or some other small creature. These are annoying, but generally will not cause too much harm. To be on the safe side, make sure your car isn’t too far of a hike away from your spot on the beach.
Now That You Are Safe, What About the Fun?
Now that we’ve covered how to stay safe, let’s discuss how to have fun! If you like laying at the beach and reading, beach towels are a must. A beach towel should be much larger than your average bath towel because you will be laying down on it. You’ll want it to cover more than your whole body.
Even if you are more of a chair person, it is never a bad idea to pack some towels. If you’re bringing kids with you, you will want to bring toys as well. Shovels and buckets are perfect for creating intricate sand castles, a timeless classic. The beach is also great for sports like badminton and volleyball, which can both be set up with the same net. The best part about the beach is that you can simply relax and listen to music or plan a more active day including beach specific exercise or even searching the beach with a metal detector.
One often overlooked aspect of going to the beach is hydration. It is never a pleasant feeling to be in the hot sun surrounded by water that you can’t drink. Make sure to pack some water bottles when heading out. We recommend at least 2 water bottles per person.
Now that you’re all packed and ready to go you’re probably asking yourself how to get all of your gear down to the water. While a wheelbarrow would work, it would also attract some strange looks. Luckily there are awesome beach carts specifically designed for lugging your bags down to the beach. These are perfect for transporting all of the goods you may need, and can usually be stored easily as well.
Now that you’re all set for the beach, get out there and have fun!
